Your first session
Make time to listen.
Pick a quiet room and a quiet hour. Turn the Spirit Box on and let it sweep. It moves through AM or FM stations fast, so you hear static and quick bits of sound.
Ask a question. Pause. Listen. Write down what you hear, and when.
Charge it first
Give it a full charge before your first session. The charging cable is in the box.
Press SCAN
The sweep starts. Press SCAN again to pause it.
Set the pace
Tap << or >> to change how fast it sweeps. Try a few speeds and see what suits you.
Record and replay
Record it. Then listen again.
Things go by fast in a sweep. So the Spirit Box records. Slip in the included 32GB microSD card and save the whole session. Later, play it back slowly and check your notes.
Start the sweep
Press SCAN. You can record while the radio sweeps.
Hold REC/PLAY
Hold the red button until REC shows on the screen. Hold it again to stop and save.
Play it back
Press MODE to switch to SD card playback. Or open the files on a computer with the USB data cable.
For quiet details, plug your own headphones into the headphone port. Write down nearby sounds, like a car or a dog, so you can rule them out later.
The controls
Every button is labelled.
No app and no menus. The controls sit on the front, with the name printed under each one.
- SCAN
- Starts or pauses the sweep.
- << SWP REV and >> SWP FWD
- Tap to change sweep speed. With the sweep paused, hold one for 2 seconds to sweep in that direction.
- REC/PLAY
- Records your session. Plays it back in SD card mode.
- MODE
- Moves between FM, AM and SD card playback.
- < and > CHANNEL
- Step through stations one at a time.
- X DELETE
- Removes a recording in SD card mode.
- On top
- Power switch, volume wheel and the flashlight button. The light is built in.
- On the right end
- Headphone port, USB port, charging port and the microSD card slot.

A Spirit Box is a tool for curious listening. Here is what to expect.
What will I hear?
Mostly static and quick bits of radio as it sweeps. Some people hear words or names in the sweep. Radio fragments happen naturally, so record, take notes and review with care. We can't promise any result.
Do I need the SD card?
Only to record. Without a card it works as a sweeping radio. The included 32GB card is ready to use. If you use your own card, keep it at 32GB or smaller and formatted as FAT32.
Is it hard to use?
No. Each button is labelled. Start with SCAN, then try the sweep speed. The video walkthrough and user manual are free in our resource library.
How does it charge?
It has a rechargeable battery. Use the charging cable in the box with a USB power adapter (not included). Charge it fully before first use.
Can I use it outdoors?
Yes, in dry weather. It is not waterproof. Keep it out of rain, damp and direct sun.
What if something goes wrong?
